Motorbike Insurance Guide

Motorbike insurance is one of the few insurances that is required by law. If a motorbike is driven on the road it must have motorbike insurance. The only exception is if a motorbike has a Statutory Off-Road Notice. Which means that by law the motorbike cannot be driven on the road, but also does not require insurance.

Types of Motorbike Insurance

Motorbike insurance in the UK comes in three main categories:

• Third party – This is the minimum legal requirement for motorbike insurance. It’s a basic form of insurance that covers the costs of any damage incurred while driving.
• Third party, fire, and theft – Similar to third party insurance, but covers the cost of replacing a motorbike if it’s stolen or damaged in a fire.
• Comprehensive cover – Provides everything as above, but also covers costs for repairing or replacing the motorbike and any medical expenses they incur.

Optional Extras

Motorbike owners can choose from a number of different policy add ons when they are taking out their insurance policy. The add ons include the ability to nominate additional riders who would be covered when using the motorbike; purchasing coverage for pillion passengers; and purchasing coverage that applies when the owner of the insured motorbike rides another motorbike.
